Elder Joyce Blakesley recently gave a Sunday offering meditation about tithing. She asked if we knew what tithing was. We hear the term each week. The power point has a slide which says “Tithes and Offerings.” But what is a tithe?
"Tithe" means a tenth or 10 percent. The tithing system described in the Bible was designed specifically to meet the needs of the religious, economic and political system of ancient Israel. Tithes were also used to meet the needs of foreigners, orphans and widows.
In the New Testament, Jesus made it clear that we are to be generous to those in need:
When people ask you for something, give it to them.
When they want to borrow money, lend it to them.
Matthew 5:42 CEV
Giving is to be done cheerfully, rather than as an obligation and not for the purpose of public recognition. Generous giving is an acknowledgment that everything we have is a gift from God, and is to be used to serve and honor God. We are urged to share generously of whatever talents, abilities and wealth God has entrusted to us.
· What wealth do we possess?
· What are the gifts God has given us?
· What is God’s hope for their use?
In this newsletter, you will find a letter from Diana Collins, Stewardship Chair. On behalf of the church, she invites us to complete a Commitment Card, indicating how we will share our financial wealth in the ministry and mission of Capitol Hill Christian Church in 2016.
May we bring our tithes and offerings with abundant joy and generosity!
Blessings,
Pastor Candice
