Candice's Comments

The season of Lent begins on February 18, Ash Wednesday. Lent is an opportunity for spiritual and personal examination, a time to study our relationship with God and others, a time to improve those relationships and make them more meaningful.

Richard Rohr in his book Falling Upward writes, "You are already in the eternal flow that Christians would call the divine life of the trinity." This Lent is an opportunity to journey along and dive into that divine river.

Water flows where there is least resistance. A river would rush through the land in a straight line if it didn't encounter obstacles, but there are always obstacles and these are the places where the river bends and renegotiates its path. Rivers experience both flood and drought. They are influenced by the variables of nature and the interventions of humankind, much like we are impacted by these things in our own human experience.

Lent is the rushing journey toward Easter, but it is not a straightforward journey. There are tricks and turns along the way, and variables that change the course of events. As we worship in the season of Lent, we will stop awhile at places where the Lenten story bends in order to recall our history and traditions, to retell our sacred stories, and take time to renew ourselves before renegotiating our way.

But the river -- the divine -- continues to flow. As life twists and turns, we flow -- God flows -- with it. Every turn is a chance to slow down, reflect, and then flow onward toward Easter.

                 Lenten Blessings,
               Pastor Candice
