As we experience life, we experience the people all around us. Some have black hair; some have blue eyes. People are tall, short, and in-between. Some are male; some female. Some are young and some are more seasoned in life years. We come in all shapes and sizes and colors. Our world is full of variety as we look around us at the people God created. We can find many differences.
As we prepare this month to celebrate Pentecost Sunday on May 27, we remember how our differences were overcome by realizing what we all had in common as disciples, followers of Jesus.
In Acts 2:1-21 we read that people from all over the world were gathered in Jerusalem. People came from different countries and spoke different languages. More than anything, people noticed the differences among them.
But then, something special happened. Like a strong wind, like a breath of fresh air, they noticed that they all had one thing in common: God’s Spirit was with them – with each of them. Because they were followers of Jesus, they knew this was more important than any of the things that were different about them and might have kept them apart.
We all are a part of the church. God’s Spirit is in each and every one of us. It helps us to try to understand each other, to accept each other, and to love each other. Our differences make us special. God’s Spirit makes us one church.
So let’s celebrate our differences, rejoicing in the variety of God’s good creations.
And let’s welcome the Spirit of God that is in each of us that we might together be the church that extends hospitality, compassion and grace to all. Let’s welcome moments of re-creation when God’s Spirit is present among us in new and often surprising ways, bringing life.
Where do you see life bursting forth in the church? Rejoice and be glad!
Pentecost Blessings,
Candice
